How do I set up a handicap?

DSGA is affiliated with the USGA and thus, as a member of DSGA, you can have access to the GHIN.com internet handicap system to maintain an official handicap index.  The cost for this service is $15 per year.  See membership page for payment info.  Once you pay, you will receive a GHIN membership number and can start entering your scores!

The GHIN.com website will allow you to look up the ‘rating’ and ‘slope’ of any course’s tees when you enter your scores. You can enter rounds of 9 holes or 18 holes. After 5 rounds (18 holes) or 10 1/2 rounds (9 holes), you will have an established handicap index!

Once you have an established handicap index, you may have to subtract strokes from your scores prior to adding them via GHIN.com.  This is the Equitable Stroke Control (ESC) scoring system which essentially eliminates those ‘blowup’ holes and ‘smooths’ your scoring history.  You must MANUALLY adjust your score according to the ESC system BEFORE entering it into GHIN.com.  Click on the ‘?’ next to the ‘ESC score’ entry field on GHIN.com to see the small chart you must use to adjust your scores.

Starting in 2010, your handicap is updated on the 1st and 15th of every month.

Why get a handicap?

What's in a handicap?

An official handicap index - one that is established through the auspices of a USGA affiliated club - is called a "handicap index." To establish a handicap index, a golfer needs a minimum of five most recent scores (18 hole score) along with the Course Rating and Slope Rating of the teeboxes that were played.

A USGA Handicap Index is a number that represents a golfer's potential for scoring. A handicap index of 14.5, for example, indicates that a golfer will,on his or her best days, shoot somewhere around 14 or 15 strokes over par.

USGA Course Rating is an evaluation of the difficulty of a golf course for a scratch golfer (i.e. a golfer with a handicap of 0).

USGA Slope Rating is a number ranging from 55 to 155 that represents the difficulty of a course for a bogey golfer (i.e. a golfer whose handicap is around 18).
